No employer may require an employee or applicant to...."inspect or challenge any criminal history record information relating to that person for the purpose of obtaining a copy of the persons record in order to qualify for employment."
The statute is K.S.A. §22-4710. This is an oddly worded statute and it is unclear exactly what it is intended to cover. Unfortunately a violation by the employer is a Class A misdemeanor. The attorney general states that the section prohibits requiring the individual to inspect their criminal record. 1979 Kan. 161. Best-guess: employer cannot require individuals to obtain their own criminal record.

Employers may only deny employment based upon an applicant’s criminal history if the information reasonably bears upon the applicant’s trustworthiness or the safety and well being of the employer’s employees and customers.
